Caught on fire

I can’t recall any discussion in aue of the usage of "caught on fire",
vs. "caught fire", and Google doesn’t find anything either.

This morning, on a local radio station, the news guy used the phrase
"caught on fire" three times during a story.

A Google search yields 1.8 million hits for "caught fire", and 394,000
for "caught on fire".

Does anyone here find it normal or acceptable?

Still waiting for my master cylinder at dealer

This is like two weeks. What the heck is taking them so long? Maybe
they just want to trade the Sonata they gave us for my wifes Elantra.
Seems strange that a dealer can’t get a part like this in a reasonable
time frame.

2006 Hyundai Sonata tries to overheat

Let me first state that two trips to the service dept were not helpful.

If I drive the car at speeds greater than about 50 mph and suddenly stop
(off ramp, traffic jam), sometimes the engine temp gauge starts to rise
like the engine (v6) is trying to overheat. I have tried turning on or off
the air conditioning with little effect. Putting the car in N and running a
fast idle helps a little sometimes. This happens in the winter and summer
(live in Texas). When this event does happen, it does not self correct. I
have popped the hood and do see the cooling fan cycle on and off about
every minute.  I used an IR thermometer and measure temps around the
engine and cooling system, and most are about normal, if not a few degrees
higher than normal. I do see (measure)the thermostat opening and closing by
the temp change on the radiator hoses. The only thing that corrects the
event is driving off. At speeds greater than 15 or 20 will slowly bring
the temp back down to normal. If I do drive off and the temps go back to
normal, the next stop will not usually cause another event. The dealer
checked everything with the car when not overheating and all chaeck out ok
(computer fan, sensors, etc.)

I think the fan, although it cycles on and off, does not run fast enough
when on and/or the water pump flow is too low at idle to fully clear the
engine of the hot water from the freeway drive when suddenly stopping.

Anybody seen this before in a Sonata (or other V6 Hyundai)? I guess I have
to drag the service mgr around and get it to happen in front of him. Right
now he sorta believes me, but I can see he does not to want get sucked
into a difficult to diagnose problem like this if he doesn’t have to.

Thanks.

Hyundaitech – your opinion please – hot piston slap

Hi, I have an ’06 Rio5 automatic hatch which has the same motor as the new
Accent (1.6 Alpha CVVT).

It has always had some piston noise when cold and I realise that’s quite
normal but just recently I’ve noticed a piston noise (sounds like just 1
cylinder) even when hot.

This occurs at around 1700rpm under light load e.g. coming up a long,
slightly inclined driveway at about 15kmh.  It’s not pinging as I use
95RON.

I always drive the car with consideration and ran it in carefully.  It’s
due for its second oil change (15000ks) and I supply my own oil to the
dealer (Castrol Magnatec).

Is this condition more than just an irritation?  Could it cause premature
engine problems? (out of warranty of course!).

Should I push this issue with the dealer before my warranty runs out?

Do you think a different type of oil may lessen the problem?

Like everyone else here, I appreciate your presence on these forums.

Thanks, Rick

2004 Elantra GT 5 speed

I have a 2004 Elantra GT with a 5 speed trans. The car runs great
but I’m having a problem when pulling out from a dead stop. When the
car is cold it will pull out fine but after it warms up it seems to me like
you have to give it allot of gas to get it move without stalling. The car
only has 20000 miles and the clutch is not slipping but the gas pedal
seems very sensitive. I was told there may be a TSB out that would
solve this problem but the local dealer said he hasn’t heard of it.
He also said that the Elantra is a heavy car and that having to rev
the car to 2.5 or 3 grand to pull out is normal. I have driven  many manual
transmissions and that doesn’t seem normal to me.

Wheel bearing — rear — replacement for 2000 Tiburon

Hi all,

I have the worst whining sound coming from the rear of the car — but,
amazingly, nothing is loose.  The car is a hatch so it resonates like
nobody’s business and I cannot really tell for sure which wheel is
bad.  So far I have had 3 of 4 bearings replaced, and I think this is
one that I already replaced.

Do you think I corner too hard on those mountain roads? lf this car
weren’t so pretty…

I am going to order the part, but the site doesn’t have a picture.  I
recall the part that I got from a junk yard, the one that is whining,
was a bolt-in assembly but I am not sure.

I would really be grateful for any hints about this.

Thanks in advance, John

Trailer towing with 2001 XG

I have a low mileage XG with a good trailer hitch installed. I am looking at
towing a tent trailer (not yet bought) fair distances. Any input on
appropriate trailer weights or tongue weight would be appreciated.
(The owner’s book really doesn’t help b/c it only refers to Sonata specs.)

2003 Accent smoke?

Coming home tonight, I noticed my 2003 Accent seemed to be smoking…  I
could see it caught in the headlights of the car behind me.  Pulled over and
took a look, but could not find the source, or see any trace, of the smoke.
I could, however, very distinctly smell burning rubber.  When I saw the
smoke, it was on the passenger side.  I popped the hood, but still nothing.
Gonna jack the car up tomorrow and check under it, but I’m not a very
mechanically inclined person.  Any ideas on what it could be?
